Thai massage at Wat Pho

The massage pavilion stands in the temple grounds at 2 Sanam Chai Road. It offers Thai massage and foot massage, with balm and Plai oil treatments as extras. Massage is priced separately from the entrance fee, so your temple ticket does not include it.

UNESCO lists the practice of Thai massage, Nuad Thai, on its list of intangible cultural heritage (2019). That listing covers the practice as a whole. It is not a rating of any single massage venue. Other branches of the massage school exist outside the temple, so check the address before you go. If you would rather learn the technique than receive it, see the massage courses.

For most first-time visitors, a 60-minute Thai or foot massage at THB 520 is the sensible choice. It is long enough to relax and short enough to fit around a temple visit. Take the 30-minute option if you only want to rest your feet, and the 120-minute option if the massage is the main plan for the afternoon.

Choosing the length

The price list is simple, but the lengths are not priced evenly.

30 minutes

THB 340 for Thai or foot massage. Because it costs more per minute than the longer sessions, it suits a short rest, not value for money.

60 minutes

THB 520. This is the standard length for most visitors.

120 minutes

THB 1,040, exactly double the 60-minute price. Book it only if you have the whole afternoon free.

Balm or Plai oil

These treatments start at 60 minutes, at THB 680 for balm and THB 620 for Plai oil.

Hours, waiting time and groups

Massage runs from 08:00 to 19:30. The time of the last start can differ, so do not arrive in the final half hour and expect a full session.

Waiting times change through the day. Ask at the pavilion how long the wait is before you decide, and keep your afternoon flexible. Tour groups and groups of 12 or more people are asked to make contact by LINE or WhatsApp in advance. Individual visitors can ask at the pavilion.

Treat the session as a massage, not as medical care. If you have an injury, tell the therapist before you begin.

Before you go

Small points that make the visit easier.

Plan the order

Seeing the temple first and having the massage afterwards suits tired feet. Check the opening hours so you arrive with time for both.

Keep the afternoon flexible

A queue can push your start time back. Do not schedule a tight connection straight after the massage.

Know which branch you are at

The school has branches outside the temple. The pavilion in the temple grounds is at 2 Sanam Chai Road. Check the price at the branch you choose.

Dress for the temple

You pass through the grounds first, so cover shoulders and knees. See the dress code.

The sen lines

Drawings of the pressure points along the sen lines can be seen at Wat Pho. They show how the tradition maps the body, and they are worth a look before or after your session.

After your massage, Wat Arun on the other river bank makes a short add-on.
